Dahlia Tubers (Ball) - Ivanetti FAQs

When do I plant dahlia tubers?

Think of planting your dahlias when you plant your tomatoes. Plant in spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 60°F. In warmer climates, planting can begin earlier than in regions with colder springs.

Why do Ball Dahlias hold up so well in wind and rain?

Ball dahlias tend to hold up better in wind and rain because of their compact, rounded flower heads and tightly arranged, inward-curving petals. Unlike larger, flatter dahlia blooms, their dense, symmetrical shape offers less resistance to wind, while their closely packed petals are less likely to become bent or damaged by rain. Their relatively compact blooms also put less strain on the stems, helping them remain upright during inclement weather.

    Do dahlias need staking?

Staking is recommended, particularly in windy locations or when plants become heavily loaded with flowers. Providing support early helps protect stems as the plant grows.

Can I save Ivanetti Dahlia tubers to plant again next year?

Yes. In climates with mild winters and well-draining soil, tubers can often remain in the ground. In colder regions, dig them after the first frost, allow them to dry briefly, and store them in a cool, frost-free location until spring.

Will dahlias come back every year?

Dahlias are tender perennials that can overwinter in the ground in sufficiently warm climates with good drainage. In colder regions, tubers should be lifted after frost and stored in a cool, frost-free location until spring.

My Ivanetti dahlias were a deeper purple than pictured and absolutely gorgeous. I grew them in pots in NE Florida. They were approx 2.5 foot tall and prolific bloomers. Blooms were about 2.5 inches across. I'll buy again.
