Customer photo review of Dahlia Tubers (Ball & Decorative) - Madeline Mix

I'm so disappointed and upset. I dug up my dahlia tuber clumps today (I have about 60 plants in total) and one of the Madeline Mix varieties had very abnormal bumpy sprout-like growths on the tuber clump which I assume are gall (likely crown gall). This is my first time ever encountering gall - the rest of my plants were completely healthy and dahlias have been grown in my garden every year up until now without issue. This tells me that the gall came with the tuber. As a precaution I threw out all five of the dahlias from this mix. I sincerely hope that none of my other dahlias were infected by them! What a headache and upsetting thing to deal with. A side note beyond the gall - it's very frustrating to buy a dahlia mix and for the tubers to not be individually labeled. These were just thrown unlabeled all together in the same bag. As well, I purchased other varieties from Eden Brothers this year that turned out to be mislabeled. Anyway, I've heard of gall being an issue when purchasing from big box stores and suppliers who source tubers from overseas. My experience unfortunately supports this. I'm no longer going to take this risk and will only purchase tubers from reputable US growers. I've had less than stellar experiences buying dahlias from EB these past few years. I sadly recommend avoiding them.

Store owner replied: Hello KittenLady. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're very sorry to hear that your dahlias showed signs of gall when lifted, as we take this seriously and understand how disappointing this can be. While we take great care to ensure our tubers are healthy at the time of shipping, crown gall can occasionally develop due to soil conditions, injuries to the tuber, or bacterial presence over time. We’ve shared your report with our growers so we can continue working to prevent these rare occurrences. We're glad we were able to offer a resolution, and we truly appreciate your feedback as we work to improve every step of the process!

I grew these in 2024 (and again in 2025 from cuttings) and I’m just getting around to writing a review. Similar to another grower, the tuber titled Teasbrook Audrey grew a totally different flower for me. It’s beautiful, just not what I ordered. The Pink Pearl and Doris Duke varieties are prolific and hearty and beautiful. For whatever reason, the Japanese beetles are really drawn to the Pink Pearl in my garden. I’m growing these out for the second year from divided tubers and they are doing great. The color of Pink Magic is absolutely stunning. The variegation is lovely! The stems are really short though, so I think it makes a better bedding plant than one for cut flowers. The stems are about 2 inches long. The Preference tuber never sprouted for me when I planted it in 2024, unfortunately! I didn’t get around to reporting it so that’s on me. Eden Brithers customer service has always been phenomenal but I dragged my feet so I don’t really expect them to do anything about it now.

Customer photo review of Dahlia Tubers (Ball & Decorative) - Madeline Mix

I purchased this mix, along with the Madeline mix. Out of 10 bulbs, I had very limited growth and 1 small bloom (barely the size of a silver dollar). Very disappointed. I should have listened to my niece and purchased from a local grower.

Customer photo review of Dahlia Tubers (Ball & Decorative) - Madeline Mix

I think I was sent the wrong combination of dahlias. I had three of the five germinate, and only two of those made any blooms. The blooms were beautiful, but not what I expected at all. I attached pictures of both. One of the plants was an extremely dark red with yellow centers. It was a prolific bloomer, but not the color I wanted at all. The other was a pretty pink flower, but it didn’t look like any of the included images. Overall I was very disappointed.

I don’t think I was given the correct tubers. I have two tubers growing very dark red flowers. Nothing like what is shown on the website. Pretty disappointed.
